he Latest On Eggs

The pendulum swings back and forth. What is true today may not be true tomorrow. Recently we posted a blog with the title “Eggs Are In”. Now guess what? Eggs are out. Or maybe they are sort of out.

 

Let’s make some sense of this. In the mid 1900s new data suggested that dietary cholesterol was unhealthy and predisposed one to clogged  arteries causing heart attacks and strokes.

 

Years later more refined studies suggested that the problem was not cholesterol. It was dietary saturated fat. The government then relaxed it warning about cholesterol and grouped eggs with lean meats, poultry, seafood, legumes and nuts as a healthy source of protein.

 

Now we have a new, large study published in The Journal Of The American Medical Association. The conclusion of the study was that eating 300 milligrams of dietary cholesterol a day was associated with a 17% higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and an 18% greater risk of death from any cause. 300 milligrams of cholesterol is less than the amount found in two large egg yolks.

 

This was a very detailed study of more than 29,000 American adults. Obviously it waves a red flag, but we need to point out that this was an observational study and did not prove cause and effect. More research is needed.

 

In the meantime we recommend moderation The mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, seafood and olive oil  Most nutritional experts rank it as number 1. Follow the Mediterranean Diet. Have your blood lipid levels measured, and if they are in a normal range it is alright to enjoy two or three eggs a week.
