As the 2018 NFL regular season enters its final weeks, New England Patriots’ Julian Edelman is finally back in the swing of things. Edelman missed most of last year with an injury, then sat out the first four games of this season serving a suspension, so fans haven’t seen as much of the wide receiver lately as they might like.
That affects the image people think of when they do catch a glimpse of Edelman. During the practices, training camps, and games he’s with the Patriots, Edelman can almost always be seen wearing rocking team gear.
Fans don’t get as many chances to check out his off-duty look—like the first thing he throws on after a big game (“comfortable jeans, hoodie and my Relentless beanie,” he tells MensHealth.com). Whether he’s unwinding at home or treating himself to a fun night out, the wide receiver enjoys his downtime and having fun with his style.
“I definitely follow fashion and trends and will sporadically add them to my wardrobe in an organic way,” he says. “But my style at its core is a minimal, clean and timeless look.”
Edelman especially appreciates the chance to skip out on tight fits after spending hours in the constricting uniforms he rocks on the field. Getting to wear something easy and comfortable during his time off can be a blissful feeling. “I wear a lot of sweatshirts and joggers in the winter and gym shorts and tees in the summer. I really appreciate something that is easy to slip on and chill out in,” he explains.
That focus on ease and comfort also extends to his choice in jeans, a staple in Edelman’s “going out” wardrobe. “I am definitely a denim first guy,” he admits. But finding the right pair to fit his frame hasn’t always been easy.
Being an NFL star has its perks, though—so Edelman got to design his own cut to fit him just right through a capsule he did with lifestyle brand Joe’s Jeans.
“I am not easy to fit, due to my athletic build, and from the start, I loved how the jeans fit me,” he says. They’re also designed with performance stretch, which allows him to feel super comfortable in them whenever he’s on the go.
Edelman finds the pants so comfortable that he’ll even wear them on the plane, a place where many passengers settle for sweats. “If it’s a trip for pleasure, I always go with a comfortable outfit,” he says. “You will see me in my Julian Edelman x Joe’s The Folsom jeans in Kinetic, a pair of sneakers and Bose headphones.” That said, he likes to take his airport style game up a notch when he’s traveling for work. “If it’s a business trip with the Patriots, you will probably see me in a three-piece suit, with an emphasis on tailored fashion,” he says.
This holiday, though, Edelman is staying put and won’t be flying anywhere (the Patriots have a two-game home stand to end the season). Luckily, that means he’ll get to spend time with his loved ones. “We are working throughout most of the holiday season, so my family comes to me,” he says. “We do a big Christmas dinner and open presents at my place in Boston. My parents bring my daughter out for the week, it’s really special.”
