Marvel Finally Drops Avengers 4 Trailer

By | December 7, 2018

It’s finally here. On Friday, Marvel released the long-awaited trailer for Avengers 4, a.k.a. Avengers: Endgame.

And if you’ve desperately been wondering what happened to the stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the wild events of Avengers: Infinity War you’re going to want to watch this tour de force sitting down, because a lot has changed. (In case you missed it, in Infinity War, Thanos destroyed half of all living things in the universe, including a few of our favorite superheroes.)

The biggest change happens to the Avenger who’s sometimes the easiest to forget, Hawkeye. A minute-and-a-half into the action, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) shows up — brandishing a sword instead of his typical bow-and-arrow. Has Clint traded in his Hawkeye outfit to become Ronin, a samurai identity that he assumes for a time in the comics?

It seems possible, and it could mean that Clint’s family was somehow lost, perhaps snapped away by Thanos in the first film. He’s been semi-retired since the events of Age of Ultron, but he wasn’t in Infinity War. He’s here now, though, and he definitely doesn’t seem happy.

(Also notable: Mark Ruffalo is in the film as Hulk, putting to rest all that silliness from a few days ago, when the Endgame directors playfully “fired” the actor for leaking a title spoiler.)

Josh Brolin’s Thanos, meanwhile, remains the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most multidimensional villain, and his role in Endgame certainly could be interesting. He appears to have retired his battle armor; it seems to be hanging unworn midway through the trailer. Will he even see the Avengers coming for him in Endgame?

Meanwhile, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is off in space, recording a goodbye message to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). When we last saw Stark, he was just barely surviving his space encounter with Thanos — solely because the Mad Titan let him live after gaining Doctor Strange’s Infinity Stone. Now we know that Stark somehow escaped Thanos’ destroyed homeworld, even though his suit was apparently trashed and he’s running low on food and oxygen.

All the original Avengers are alive, in fact, and that, along with the film’s title, Endgame, lends credence to the long-held assumption that this movie will be the last ride for Stark, Hawkeye, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hulk.

All appear in this trailer, with no sign of the Guardians of the Galaxy or of Marvel’s other newer stars. Just one of Marvel’s “new class” makes an appearance: The trailer ends with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man asking Cap to let him into (likely) the Avengers compound.

At the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, we see what happens to Ant-Man during Thanos’ snap: He winds up trapped in the quantum realm while Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne disintegrate. As expected, the quantum realm seems to have protected Ant-Man from the snap, and he could play a key role in Endgame and Captain America’s world-saving plan.

This much seems assured: in Avengers: Endgame, we’ll see the remaining good guys finish their fight against Thanos. And knowing Marvel, it’s going to be epic as hell.

Avengers: Endgame is slated for an April 2019 release.
